Nintendo announced on Tuesday morning that they will be releasing an updated model of their Nintendo Switch video game console.
The update, called the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will have a number of improvements over the current model. First and foremost, the new model will feature a 7-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen, allowing for more vibrant colours when played in handheld mode. The upgraded model also features a built-in wired LAN port for better connections during online play, as well as 64GB of internal storage.
In comparison, the current model features a 6.2-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, 32GB of internal storage, and lacks a wired LAN port. In the past, Nintendo has sold a LAN adapter to allow people to experience a wired connection while playing online.
Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser has said that “The new Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is a great option for players who want to experience the new vibrant screen when playing in handheld and tabletop mode…With the addition of this new model to the Nintendo Switch family of systems, people have an additional choice of a system that best fits the gaming experience they desire – whether it’s Nintendo Switch (OLED model), Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite.”
Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that a new Nintendo Switch model featuring an OLED screen, 4K resolution and stronger processing power would be going into production sometime in 2021. While this model does not render games in a higher resolution or have more processing power, this new model still features improvements, and looks to be the best way for new players to experience games on Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will be released in two SKUs. The first SKU will feature a set of white Joy-Con controllers and a white docking station. The second SKU will more resemble previous Nintendo Switch models, featuring a set of neon red and blue Joy-Con controllers, along with a black docking station.
The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will release alongside Metroid Dread on October 8th, and will retail in Canada for an MSRP of $449.99 CAD.
