(G, J. Ottawa Senators at Seattle Kraken, 2023)
Finding fun activities to do for students in Ottawa can be a challenge, and finding them at an affordable price can be even more difficult. Luckily, the Algonquin College Students’ Association runs many events every year. Included in this year’s events are low-cost Ottawa Senators tickets. Tickets are available at the Algonquin Commons Theatre Box Office ($30 SENS STUDENT TICKETS, n.d.-a). The student association can be reached by email at studentsassociation@algonquincollege.com for any questions about the events. From experience, they respond in a timely manner.
Listed on the Algonquin College Students’ Association website are $30 tickets for three separate games; November 25th against Calgary(($30 SENS STUDENT TICKETS, n.d.-a), December 5th against Detroit ($30 SENS STUDENT TICKETS, n.d.-b) and January 16th against Washington ($30 SENS STUDENT TICKETS, n.d.-c). It’s worth noting that the games against Detroit and Washington could significantly impact the Senators’ hopes to make the playoffs, as they are fighting with both teams for a spot in the Eastern Conference (NHL Hockey Standings, n.d.). Although the tickets are similarly priced to the cheapest Sens tickets (Ottawa Senators Tickets, n.d.), the seats’ location and overall experience make them a steal.
CKDJ 107.9 is no stranger to sports, as they are an official broadcaster of the Nepean Raiders Junior A Hockey Club. Junior hockey has been shown to produce some high-level talent, such as Mackenzie Weegar, who played for Nepean and is now an Assistant Captain for the Calgary Flames (MacKenzie Weegar – Stats, Contract, Salary & More, n.d.). Former Ottawa Senator Marc Methot is another talented player from Junior A, playing in the same league as the Raiders when he laced up for Kanata in the 2001-2002 season (Marc Methot – Stats, Contract, Salary & More, n.d.). Student listeners of CKDJ can now listen to junior hockey as well as watch these players on the big stage once they’ve matured.
I spoke with two students who got tickets from The Algonquin College Students’ Association for a Senators preseason game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 24th. I asked Lukas Auer, a Radio Broadcasting student, if it was worth going to the game. He said, “Oh yeah, for the price, it’s definitely worth it.” Both Lukas and another student, Domenico Divincenzo, agreed that the seats were in a great spot. Domenico stated, “The seats were great; they were almost as good as the ones I had right behind the Sens bench last year.” Lukas chimed in, saying, “It was a great section, we could see everything.” Both students also mentioned that the seats were in the 100 level, making $30 a steal of a price considering the cheapest tickets for the Calgary Flames game on November 24th in the 100 level are listed at $100 on the popular ticketing website StubHub (Ottawa Senators Tickets, n.d.).
If a fun and fast-paced environment wasn’t enough, the Senators are looking to be a highly competitive team for the first time in years. The Sens’ expectations are as high as they’ve been since 2018 as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since then. Goaltender Linus Ullmark and defenseman Nick Jensen are both recent additions to the team who are hoping to help fix the defensive problems that have plagued the Senators ever since the departure of goaltender Craig Anderson in 2020 (Craig Anderson Stats and News, n.d.).
The Senators have begun the season with a 6-6-0 record (NHL Hockey Standings, n.d.) and are currently one point out of a playoff spot. As the season progresses, each game will become more and more important, adding to the exciting atmosphere in the arena. Although hockey may not be everyone’s favourite sport, it’s hard to beat the excitement of a live game. At heart, I am not a Senators fan, but even I can admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed every single game that I have been to.
